Are You Religious?

April 27, 2008

Among those who consider themselves religious, many are guilty of making the holiness of God and the preciousness of faith crude banalities, rendering sublime matters of the spirit as flat as last week’s champagne. The result is an image so self-serving, cramped and simplistic that such a God could never have managed to ignite a bush or called a son, much less created a universe of vast complexity.

Pursued by Kindness

April 13, 2008

We spend so much time chasing after dreams of happiness, we fail to realize that it is we who are being chased by grace. We are insistently pursued until the self-concern in us is driven out and replaced by an open-hearted love for God’s world, our neighbors, ourselves.

A Watered Garden

March 30, 2008

Whenever there is a disaster, donations pour in to relieve suffering. We give generously when our attention is arrested by some enormity, but what about the kind of consistent giving that is based on who we are as persons under God and what we know in faith God requires of us?

Reverend Dr. Jeffrey S. O'Neill - Complete Sermon [pdf*]

The Fall Guy

February 10, 2008

Life is a mix: the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. Lying within us, side by side, like sunlight and shadow, is goodness and evil. These are choices of our freedom, the same freedom Adam and Eve exercised, exploring the border between love and communion, or alienation and despair.

Partly Cloudy

February 3, 2008

So much of contemporary faith seems to be little more than a crush on God. We hear folks speaking romantically about their walk with Jesus, as though strolling the beach, a glorious sunset bathing the couple in afterglow. I don’t mean to play fast and loose with anyone’s spiritual sensibilities, but where do we get off making God our buddy?

Reverend Dr. Jeffrey S. O'Neill - Complete Sermon [pdf*]

Faith for an Untidy World

January 20, 2008

Into our untidy lives God comes, looks upon the harmful choices and painful discoveries we have made and announces, "You are forgiven." In the midst of the world's chaos God stands and announces, "I am making all things new." On these two foundations, expressed most completely in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, can a faith for an untidy life be built?

Holding Things Together

November 25, 2007

It's not something to be left to someone else. If we don't tell the stories, who will? And if we don't tell the stories, how will our children know who we were? And if we don't tell the stories, how will God's story make sense to a world which knows only too well the stories of brute power and its resulting misery?

Two Pockets

October 29, 2007

Abraham Heschel said, "I used to admire intelligent people. As I grow older, I admire kind people." Kindness is the residue of humility, of not thinking more highly of ourselves than we should, of being able to imagine others wearing spiritual clothes with two pockets, just as we do. We are bearers of God’s graciousness only to the extent we are gracious ourselves.

Reverend Dr. Jeffrey S. O'Neill - Complete Sermon [pdf*]

God's To-Do List

October 21, 2007

How could we live without faith which leaves old comfortable certainties behind and reaches out for the next moment's surprise? It is faith which secures the future and faith which reveals the truth. It is faith which gives us a path to take when there is no path visible, and faith which takes the uncertainty of the day and makes it the stuff of God's purpose for tomorrow.

Table Service

September 2, 2007

"Blessed is anyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God," one anonymous voice cries out at the sumptuous feast where Jesus was guest and where he delivered his criticism of the very banquet he was attending. Whoever spoke that line got the message: blessed is anyone, blessed is everyone, for those who are welcome at the table in God’s kingdom are those called from prestigious hallways and backwater byways, from the classy and déclassé, the hearty and the heartsick.
